The dissection of the new Hark 2 website
Tuesday 8th March 2011
When we started Hark 2 we were faced with the issue that all our previous work had been for another organisation, which meant we were unable to demonstrate our skills to potential clients.
So we asked the question, "how do you demonstrate your knowledge and talent for web design and development with a limited portfolio?"
The answer was to annotate our own website in what we like to think as the internet's equivalent of a director's commentary on a DVD. This allowed us to convey our thought process behind each design and development decision made on our site, which in-turn fits into our ethos of 'thoughtful web design'.
The next step was to decide how we display this information, without getting in the way of the user's natural journey through the website.
“ The answer was to annotate our own website in what we like to think as the internet's equivalent of a directors commentary on a DVD ”
We didn't want to impede on our core message to potential clients with annotations getting in the way and making this site look cluttered with vital information being lost in the process. So we came up with a solution to activate a tooltip style overlay via clicking the little
symbol you may have seen throughout this site. This allows our relevant annotations for a page to be only one click away.
Now anyone using our site is given an insight why we've got a tagline at the top of our Homepage to the reasoning behind adding photos of ourselves to the About section. We hope this will show you that we put thought into every pixel of the site and nothing is there just for the sake of it. We personally think this results in an efficient design that serves its purpose brilliantly and looks great to boot.
